Too Happy,” the newest single from the Norwalk, CT based indie-pop band Similar Kind, is the first slapper of the summer season. The twangy island guitar immediately puts you on a beach while the driving bass that matches the synth melody line keeps your body moving. It features a delayed drop that hits consistently on the second beat and a chorus that slows the groove into cut time. The somewhat darker lyrics that address the cyclical nature of depression seem to contrast the upbeat tune, but instead of seeming misdirected or noncoherent, it comes as a bittersweet irony with the coming summer. The catchy melody is reminiscent of their popular single “Maria” that was released earlier this year, but  “Too Happy” seems to advance their sound with the coming of the new season.
