Fashion & Film: Brick [2005]

The Pin

The Pin

By Nicholas Wolf

BRICK (2005 Directed by Rian Johnson), is a fierce film with many twists and turns. The film begins with Brendan (Joseph Gordon Levitt) crouching over his dead ex-girlfriend Emily (Emily de Ravin), and it does not let off the emotional gas pedal, and neither does the wardrobe. If you want to know more then I suggest you watch it because it is a hidden gem. Each character’s loud or quiet presence is revealed with their wardrobe choices.

Kara

Kara

The first character that I will be addressing is Kara (Meagan Good). She is the devious actress type who knows more than you think. Her attitude and demeanor ooze wickedness. We don’t get to see her actual style, but you do see her fantastic make-up looks. We have not touched on the element of make-up in recent articles, but it is an equally important fashion statement. Fashion is more than just a wardrobe if you didn't know. Quick lesson: you are the fashion and the clothes are finishing touches.

The Pin (Lukas Haas), is the Boss in all black. I personally love all black, so I was all for it. The Pin is very calm and quiet just as he should be. He doesn’t need to be loud because he has people who can do that for him, so why not save energy. His style is as cryptic as his madness. He dons slacks, long black socks, a cane, black toe shoes, and a gothic black coat. His all-black drip accentuates his mob boss intensity.

Lastly, Laura (Nora Zehetner), the beautiful, classical mastermind. She is the main femme fatal of the cult classic. Spoiler, but who would have thought that she really is the one behind everything. As she tried to take down everything she somehow fell in love with the man she unintentionally hurt. Throughout the film, you can see her dressed in a variety of multi-cultural threads. Depending on the occasion her looks range from far east kimonos to french, bonnet included. There was never a bad wardrobe day for her despite downfalls to her masterplan. Fashion does not rest, and neither does her motives.
