Norman Perry’s voice cuts through instrumentals like butter. The Connecticut-based singer rose to R&B prominence with his hit-single “Alive,” and has since released a new album Way Darker This Time. Perry’s velvety falsetto cuts through ominous, hard-hitting trap instrumentals while expressing the darkness of love: jealousy, co-dependency, resent and isolation. “Someone Else” laments the anger and resentment of realizing you’ve been cheated on over a fast-paced, muted synth pattern, echoes and a pumping 808 groove. The next track, “Signals,” flips the concept as Perry boasts of self-induced, boisterous isolation away from a significant-other stating “Don’t you wait up on me, I’ve always been the same.” The “Sainted” instrumental uses enchanting, creeping guitar samples, and a thundering 808 with Perry’s smooth vocals to synthesize a certified banger. The album concludes with “She,” which perfects this idea with a plucky guitar sample, wide sine pads, and inventive percussion to create a song so catchy it’s difficult to not compare Norman Perry to The Weeknd. With a hypnotic falsetto, crafty-beat selection and an excess of ominous energy, Norman Perry is on his way to Abel-territory and takes the spot as our Dangerous Artist of the Week.
